1857: The Crown Hotel was built by Mr. Murray of Springfield on the corner of West Main Street and South Street. James Bishop became publican and grocer there.
On 8th December 1870, four men fighting in the Crown Hotel started a riot. The crowd were incensed at one of them (a local popular soldier) being taken away by the police. Police reinforcements from Bathgate were also attacked. There were plenty of loose stones handy as West Main Street had been newly surfaced. The Police sought shelter from the mob in the butcher’s shop. It was battered with stones.
